Kool-Fire bivalent heat pump

CA-1990-083
Entry Last Changed: 21st April 1997

Summary
The aim of the project was to develop and test an innovative high efficiency burner-assisted heat pump for residential and commercial
buildings.

A bivalent burner-assisted heat pump (BAHP) was modified to locate a gas burner in an outdoor unit and to operate using air as a heat source at temperatures as low as -8°C. When the temperature is below -8°C, a propane or natural gas burner provides heat to a coil connected to the pump and delivers the heat inside. The external unit provides 100% of the heating and cooling while the internal unit serves as an air handler and heat exchanger coil. It uses freon as a heat exchanging fluid.
